Frequently Asked Questions

What is RABBLE REVIEW?

RABBLE REVIEW is a digital, mobile-first periodical launched in 2021. We publish reader submitted visual art, prose, and poetry.

What type of work does RABBLE REVIEW publish?

We publish cool fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, hybrid forms, essays, criticism, and visual art. We love unexpected connections and juxtapositions that reveal, reflect, or surprise. Bold and interesting narratives. Poetry that makes use of the auditory, visual, and semantic dimensions of language. Concise and stark images that speak for themselves. We love art that ebbs and flows between fact and fiction, the real and surreal, between genres and mediums.

How can I read RABBLE REVIEW?

As of right now the only way to download an issue of RABBLE REVIEW is by downloading it from our Gumroad page. RABBLE REVIEW was designed to be read on a smartphone screen. We want this work to be wherever you are whenever you need us. Issues will download as a PDF where we encourage readers to open the issue in an ebook reader. The pages are meant to scroll horizontally, not vertically, so please don't open the issue in Adobe Acrobat or some other basic PDF reader.

You're a Leftist literary journal, do I need to be a Leftist to submit work?

Not necessarily, but we obviously will not publish work that does not align with our stated goals. However, we have published work from contributors who do not share our politics completely, because we found their work approached our shared struggles in a meaningful and engaging way.

Why do you ask about race and gender in your submission form?

We want to see if our submission call is reaching as many communities as possible. These questions are optional, and you do not need to answer them if you do not feel comfortable. But we do like knowing how diverse our submission pool is. Answers to these questions do not impact our consideration when it comes to your submissions, with one exception: Joke answers to questions about ethnicity, gender, and preferred pronouns may result in your submission being rejected. If you do not know what a pronoun is then you have no business submitting to any literary journal, especially one run by leftists.

How many people work at RABBLE REVEIW?

We are a team of volunteers. Currently there are three full time members of the team. We have had two separate guest editors come on to help on different issues, and hope to expand the team in the coming months.

I submitted work, how long do I need to wait before I hear back from you?

We are a small team doing this work in our spare time. We hope to have our final decisions ready as soon as possible. With that said, the wait can be awhile, but it will be at least 90 days after we close submissions before we make a decision and send out acceptances and rejections.

I've had my work accepted, can I submit again for the next issue?

Absolutely!

I had my work rejected, can I submit again for the next issue?

Of course! But we would caution against a repeat submission. Sometimes a submission is great, but the piece itself is not a great fit for our literary journal. If you ever need an idea on the type of work we publish, you can download a past issue of the magazine and see for yourself. All issues of RABBLE REVIEW are free.

Why was my work rejected?

There could be many reasons why we chose not to publish your work. Please double check our submission guidelines page and make sure the work you are submitting is at or below our word count. Other reasons may have to do with the content of your submission being in opposition of our worldview and goals. Sometimes a work is well done but not a fit for the specific issue, or RABBLE REVIEW in general. Sometimes a piece is good but lacks polish. In some rare cases we may reach out to you to see if you can make adjustments, but if that is the case you will hear from us first. With all that said, please don't overthink it. We appreciate you for submitting, but we can't publish everything! If you really love the magazine and want to one day have your work be a part of it you can reach out and ask for feedback. We'll do what we can to help.
